Mathews tennis wins tough one

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team earned a tremendous win last Wednesday, defeating the Rappahannock Raiders, the defending Region A champions for the second time this season. Mathews was trailing 0-3 in match play, but rallied to win 6-3.

In top-seeded singles, Morgan Johnson again played a very strong, hard-hitting Lori Gagman and suffered a loss of 8-2. Second seed Ashley Hudgins struggled against Taylor Yeatman and took a loss of 8-2; Hudgins defeated Yeatman last time Mathews played Rappahannock, 8-6. Rachel Stewart, at number three, fell on the court while playing Conner Pemberton and fractured her arm. Stewart was winning, 2-1, but had to forfeit due to her injury.

With the Mathews girls down, 0-3, it didn’t look like they were going to pull off a team win. However, the team dug deep and worked so hard to earn a big victory. Fourth seed Alexis Wells never gave up against her opponent Kati Morrin earning the first team win in an eight-all tie-breaker (6-3)....
