Mathews tennis wins big over Gloucester

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team started off its regular season Monday with a big win, defeating Gloucester, 9-0.

In singles play, top seed Morgan Johnson, a junior, defeated Hope Warren, 8-3. At number two, junior Ashley Hudgins battled a close match and pulled off a win over Sarah Contreas, 8-6. Junior Rachel Stewart, at number three, played consistently well to win 8-1 against Zoe Warren.

Sophomore Alexis Wells, at number four, played strong tennis to defeat Nicole Pope, 8-0. Playing number five, sophomore Maddie Brown blanked Allie Wilkinson, 8-0. Junior Emma Wood, at number six, used lots of topspin to defeat Holland Bogedain, 8-0.

In doubles play at number one, Johnson and Hudgins played the closest match of the day, pulling off a 9-7 win against the Warren sisters. At number two doubles, Stewart and Wells defeated Contreas and Pope, 8-1. Brown and Wood teamed up for number three doubles and defeated Wilkinson and Mariah Rubicco, 8-3, to complete the shutout.
