Mathews tennis sweeps Middlesex, Essex

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team won all but one individual matchup last week as the Lady Devils blanked the Middlesex Chargers last Wednesday, 9-0, and rolled over the Essex Trojans the following day, 8-1.

Mathews hosted Middlesex in the Devils’ first Conference 42 match of the season. Starting off with doubles play, the top-seeded duo of Maddie Brown and Madelyn Johnson defeated Hannah Jackson and Briana Bias by scores of 6-3 and 6-0.

At number two doubles, Chloe Sanderson and Sarah Brown kept the streak going with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Mackenzie Wilson and Brooke Kirby. Third-seed doubles players Ali Haynes and Caroline Evans finished the doubles sweep for Mathews with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Maddie Wood and Vivian Reinhard.

Singles wins were posted by Maddie Brown (6-2, 6-3), Johnson (6-0, 6-0), Sanderson (6-3, 6-1), Sarah Brown (6-2, 6-2), Haynes (8-0) and Avery Betz (8-5). In exhibition play, Kate Casper lost, 8-5.
