Mathews tennis record improves to 8-1

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team picked up two more wins last week to improve its record to 8-1.

On Wednesday, even with the teams second- and third-seed singles players—Amy Collins and Aly Collins—out of play, the Lady Devils stepped up and battled hard to pull of a 7-2 win over Rappahannock.

Rappahannock will likely be a contender at regionals this year. In singles, Morgan Sears played very well but lost, 8-4. Having to replace Aly Collins at number 2 due to shoulder pain, Mercedes Wells played well but fell, 8-5. It was a great accomplishment for Wells to win five games off the number two player being that she is normally the #8 seed in the lineup.

The remaining Mathews singles players Rachel Byrd (#3 seed, 8-5), Jamie Ramsey (#4 seed, 8-6), Kasey Lynn Lyerly (#5 seed, 8-6) and Mallory Hurst (#6 seed, 8-3) went on to win their matches.
