Mathews tennis off to a great start

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team is off to a great start this season with wins over Group 3A York and 2A Bruton.

The Lady Devils have a strong squad, with 10 returning players from last year’s team; the top six all played in the first six seeds at some point last year. 

Head coach LaDonna Crain and assistant Chandler Roger decided to keep seven junior varsity girls in order to build the team for the coming years. The new players are freshmen Katie Johnson, Kate Casper, Olivia Wood, Mia Gillenwater, Sarah Brown and eighth graders Avery Betz and Caroline Evans.

The 17 girls are practicing on the four courts that were recently resurfaced with funding from the Mathews County Board of Supervisors.

The season began last Wednesday against York, with the score tied at 3-3 at the end of singles play, before MHS won two of three in doubles play to pull out the victory, 5-4.
