Mathews tennis improves to 12-1

The Mathews High School tennis team won three more matches in recent action to improve to 12-1 overall. The team picked up victories over Rappahannock (7-2) on May 3, Middlesex (9-0) on Thursday, and West Point.

Friday’s game against West Point was still considered a win, although the contest was called for rain after five matches were completed, because Mathews had swept them all. The Devils and Pointers will resume this contest later to help determine the district’s singles and doubles champions.

Morgan Sears, the Lady Devils top-seeded singles player, won all three of her matches this past week, dominating her Rappahannock and Middlesex opponents and posted an exciting 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win against the top-seeded Lady Pointer.

Amy and Aly Collins, the #2 and #3 seeds for Mathews, had singles wins against Middlesex and West Point. Both were sidelined for the Rappahannock contest in singles play, although they did team up at #1 seed doubles for a win. They also won as a duo against Middlesex.

Others posting wins against Rappahannock were Rachel Byrd (who moved up to #3 singles), Jamie Ramsey (#4 singles), Kasey Lynn Lyerly (#5 singles) and Mallory Hurst (#6 singles), as well as the third-seed doubles team of Ramsey and Lyerly. Byrd and Ramsey also won their singles matches against West Point, before the rains came.

Middlesex forfeited the fourth, fifth and sixth seed singles, as well as the second and third seed doubles due to a lack of players, making it an easy win for Mathews.

In a doubles exhibition match against Rappahannock, Leanne Moughon and Lamar Saunders dominated their Raider opponents, 8-0.

The rest of the West Point game will be held next week, at an as-yet-to-be determined date. Mathews hosted the Pointers on Tuesday, with the singles and team district championships to be determined by the outcome. The top doubles team will not be decided until the rained-out match with West Point has been played.
