Mathews tennis improves record to 11-0

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team improved its record to 11-0 following recent wins over Middlesex, Rappahannock and Essex.

Mathews shut out Middlesex, 9-0, on April 23. In singles, playing number one, Morgan Johnson defeated Marisol Lujan, 6-0, 6-2. Number two Ashley Hudgins easily won the first set, 6-0, but her opponent, Grace Ruthostzi, turned it on and gave Hudgins trouble. Hudgins pulled off the win in a tie-breaker 7-6 (8-6). Rachel Stewart, at three, left her opponent Bryana Reos scoreless, winning 6-0, 6-0. Alexis Wells, at four, only allowed her opponent, Savannah Raines, one game winning 6-0, 6-1. Fifth-seed Maddie Brown and sixth-seed Emma Wood also left their opponents scoreless, defeating Hannah Jaekgon and Cheyanne Fisher, 6-0, 6-0, in each match.
