Mathews tennis falls to Rappahannock

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team started the week by playing a tough match against three-time state champions, Rappahannock High School, on Monday evening. The visiting Raiders won, 6-2. Each girl put up a great fight against their opponents fighting long hard matches. For the wins, Ella Ward (the Devils’ the number-two singles player) took a fantastic win of 8-3 against Rappahannock’s Anne Davis. Delaney Boatman, playing number 5 singles, had a very tight match but pulled off a hard-fought win against Ava Cleary, ending with a tie breaker that ultimately won her the match with a score of 9-8 (8-6). The rest of the girls playing singles also put up an amazing fight with Lyla Duff, playing number one, losing 8-5 against Averell Vaughon. Rayann Helbig, at number three, had a close one but lost, 8-6, to Grace Gillions. Jayda Thomas, at number four, fought hard against Cat English but lost, 8-4.
