Region A doubles champions Amy and Aly Collins from Mathews High School, suffered a heartbreaking loss in Friday’s semifinals of the VHSL State Doubles Tennis Tournament at Radford University.
The MHS girls faced off against the Region C champs from Bath County, Amelia Walters and Jenny Gutting. In the first set, the Mathews twins took charge and pulled ahead, 4-1, in the first set. Walters and Gutting came back strong to win four straight games to take a 5-4 lead. Amy and Aly Collins weren’t about to give up as they came back to win the first set, 7-6 (7-2 in the tie-breaker).
The Bath County duo controlled the rest of the contest, winning the second set, 6-2, and the third and final set, 6-3. Walters and Gutting lost in the state championships to Allison Michael and Sarah Cameron of East Rockingham, 6-1, 6-0.
