Mathews tennis defeats Warhill, New Kent

 

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team defeated a pair of opponents this week by scores of 8-1 and 9-0.

The Lady Devils traveled to Williamsburg last Wednesday where they dominated the 3A Warhill Lions, 8-1. In singles, at number one, Morgan Johnson played a very consistent game to defeat Katie Braddom, 8-1. At number two, Ashley Hudgins played strong to earn a win over Sydney Cawthon 8-3. Number three Rachel Stewart played well to defeat Autumn Liu, 8-2.

Maddie Brown, playing number four, won 8-3 over Olivia Dannon by mixing in topspin and slice shots in her match. Emma Wood at number five took the only loss for the team losing, 8-5, against a tough Jackie Jones. Number six Madelyn Johnson left her opponent, Natalie Constunzo, scoreless, beating her 8-0.

Going into doubles play with the score 5-1 lead, Mathews swept all three matches. Number-one doubles Morgan Johnson and Hudgins defeated Braddom and Cawthon, 8-4. At two, Stewart and Brown won a close one over Liu...
