Mathews tennis defeats Pointers twice

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ tennis team improved to 14-0 on the season after defeating West Point twice this past week—a 9-0 shutout last Thursday on the road and an 8-1 win on Monday at home.

Mathews will finish up the regular season on Tuesday when the Lady Devils host the Middlesex Chargers, starting at 4 p.m. The Conference 42 singles tournament will be held the following day, Wednesday, May 27, at MHS with the semifinals at 1 p.m. and the finals at 4. Mathews will host the doubles tournament next Thursday, May 28, with the same schedule.

The entire Lady Devils’ lineup was on fire against West Point. Top-seeded player Morgan Johnson played C. Hagen twice, winning by identical 6-0, 6-0 margins. Second seed Ashley Hudgins defeated T. Lee by a 6-1, 4-6 and 6-3 margin last Thursday. On Tuesday, Kathryn Bray was substituted in for Hudgins due to injury.
