Mathews tennis defeats Grafton, New Kent

The Mathews High School tennis team picked up a couple more victories in recent action, including a hard-fought win over AA Grafton, 5-4, to avenge the Devils’ only loss of the season.

In last Tuesday’s match, wins were posted by second seed Aly Collins (8-2 over Sophia Lin), fourth seed Kasey Lynn Lyerly (8-3 against Jordan Keith), fifth seed Mallory Hurst (8-4 against Marisa Mosier) and the doubles teams of Amy and Aly Collins (8-4 against Sydney Short and Keith) and Lyerly and Leanne Moughon (8-2 over Mosier and Trilby Brush).

In exhibition play, Kate vanEmmerik and Carlyn Tillage suffered a 1-8 loss to a tough Grafton doubles team. Elizabeth Ransone and eighth grader Ashley Hudgins played well and won their match, 8-5.
On Monday, the Lady Blue Devils battled a young New Kent team, and high winds, to come away with an 8-1 victory. In singles, the top three seeds (Aly Collins, Amy Collins and Lyerly) took charge to win their matches by identical 8-1 margins. Hurst...
