Mathews tennis defeats Gloucester, Rappahannock

The Mathews High School tennis team has been racking up a number of victories this past week.

On Tuesday, April 10, the Lady Devils faced 5A Gloucester and won, 8-1. Two days later, they travelled to St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock to play the Rappahannock Raiders, winning once again, this time by a score of 6-3.

Starting off the match at number-one singles, Chloe Sanderson played defeated Gloucester’s Destiny Mason, 6-2, 6-2, using many consistent strokes. MHS second seed Sarah Brown was off to great start, winning her first set, 6-1, but in the second set Destiny Morales came back to win, 6-4. The third set 10-point tie-breaker was a long and dramatic one. Each player would alternate winning the point, with Morales winning the tie-breaker, 10-8.

Playing number three, Anne Stewart cruised through her match to defeat Gloucester’s Amberly Green, 6-0, 6-0. Number four Lady Devil Avery Betz showed no mercy against Skylar Tenan, using excellent topspi...
