Mathews tennis defeats AA New Kent, 7-2

The Mathews High School tennis team picked up another victory this week, returning from spring break on Monday to defeat AA New Kent, 7-2.

Top-seeded singles player Aly Collins started the Lady Devils off on the right foot, defeating Clare Morris, 8-3. Second seed Amy Collins also played strong to defeat Britta Vanderporte, 8-3. Third seed Mercedes Wells dominated her opponent, serving numerous aces to blank Katie Ilch, 8-0.

Playing number four, left-hander Leanne Moughon used lots of top-spin and outlasted long rallies to earn a win against Gina Sledd, 8-3. Kate van Emmerik, playing in the #5 spot, suffered an 8-3 loss to Breanne Wayman. Sixth seed Carlyn Tillage also suffered a loss, falling to Cassie Drain, 8-2.

 

 

Going into doubles action, Mathews needed just one more win to earn the team victory. But all three MHS doubles teams came through to give the Devils a convincing victory. The top-seeded Collins twins defeated Morris and Sledd, 8-4. Wells and Mough...
