Mathews tennis blanks Middlesex and West Point

The Mathews High School tennis team picked up a pair of 9-0 shutout victories over Conference 42 foes Middlesex and West Point in recent action. The wins improve the girls’ season record to 10-0.

The Lady Devils had little trouble with the visiting Middlesex Chargers on April 19, winning in straight sets. 

Morgan Johnson, number one for Mathews, won 6-0, 6-0 against Hannah Jackson. At number two, Ashley Hudgins faced Bryana Rios and beat her, 6-0, 6-0. Two more wins of 6-0, 6-0 with Rachel Stewart versus Annabelle Hall and Maddie Brown versus Makenzie Wilson. At number five, Emma Wood played Maddie Wood, earning another win, 6-1, 6-1. To finish up singles, Madelyn Johnson, number six, defeated Kaew Kamolphiwong, 6-0, 6-0.

The top-seeded doubles team of Morgan Johnson and Hudgins played two out of three sets against Jackson and Rios and earned a win of 6-1, 6-0. Number-two doubles Stewart and Brown defeated Hall and Wilson, 8-0. Emma Wood and Madelyn Johnson played well to earn the final team win against Maddie Wood and Kamolphiwong, 8-1.

In exhibition matches, Chloe Sanderson and Ali Haynes defeated Katie Fairy and Danielle, 8-1. It was a tough, but close loss of 6-8 for Katie Johnson and Sarah Brown, who battled hard and almost came back.

The next day, April 20, Mathews traveled to West Point for another win. Using the same lineup, senior Morgan Johnson defeated Tia Lee with a final score of 6-1, 6-1. Ashley Hudgins beat Fran Hodges, 6-0, 6-1. Rachel Stewart won 6-1, 6-0 against Tram Phan at number three singles. Maddie Brown, number four, beat Kylee Sweedo, 6-0, 6-2. Emma Wood did an awesome job of staying focused to win her match against Karry Michos, 6-1, 6-2. After Madelyn Johnson defeated Caroline Fucella, 6-0, 6-0, the team was ready for doubles.

Morgan Johnson and Hudgins started off doubles against Lee and Hodges, cruising through their match, winning 6-0, 6-2. Stewart and Brown played Phan and Fucella earning a win of 8-1. Wood and Madelyn Johnson wrapped up the matches for the week defeating Sweedo and Michos, 8-3.
