Mathews tennis beats Gloucester, Essex

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team continued its winning streak last week with a pair of 9-0 victories over Gloucester and Essex. Mathews also played Rappahannock on Monday in a match disrupted by rain.

On April 26, the MHS girls traveled to Gloucester to face the 5A Lady Dukes. First in the singles lineup, Morgan Johnson defeated opponent Hope Warren, 8-0. Ashley Hudgins, number two, quickly defeated Zoey Warren, 8-0. Number three, Rachel Stewart, continued the 8-0 winning streak to beat her opponent D. Mason. Maddie Brown played H. Bogedain at number four to pick up an 8-1 victory. At five, Emma Wood kept focus to defeat M. Robbicco, 8-2. A close match for number six Madelyn Johnson and A. Wilkinson but Johnson pulled through to win, 8-6.

Doubles began with the top-seeded duo of Johnson and Hudgins versus H. Warren and Z. Warren. In the beginning of the match, Z. Warren suffered an ankle injury that led to a forfeit at 1-1. Number-two doubles partners Stewart and Brow...
