Mathews tennis advances to state tournament

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the VHSL Class 1 state team tournament before falling on Monday to Rappahannock.

Although the Lady Devils fell by a 5-4 margin to the Raiders, Mathews finished its season as one of the top four teams in Virginia among Class 1 schools.

While the season has come to an end for the Lady Devils as a team, top-seeded singles player Chloe Sanderson is still alive in the hunt for a state title. At 9 o’clock this morning at Virginia Tech, she will face Jessica Milo of Riverheads. The winner of that match will face either Taylor Reed of Auburn or Kira Sturgill of John I. Burton for the state singles title at noon.

Meanwhile, Sanderson and Sarah Brown just missed earning a berth in the state doubles competition, placing second in last Wednesday’s Region 1A tournament.
