Mathews teen dies in hunting accident

A 13-year-old Mathews boy died last Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015, as the result of a hunting accident.

Lt. Scott Naff of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Conservation Police said that the accident occurred at around 5 p.m. on private property in the area of Long Road and Myrtle Grove Road in Bohannon.

The 13-year-old was hunting deer with a 17-year-old Mathews boy when each one shot at a deer, said Naff. The two had agreed that the younger boy would kneel down to take his shot, while the older boy would remain standing behind him and take a shot if the younger boy missed. Naff said that the older boy had cautioned the younger boy not to stand up, but the 13-year-old stood just as the 17-year-old pulled the trigger. The younger boy sustained a gunshot wound to the head, said Naff. The weapon was a 12-gauge shotgun.
