Mathews students get a glimpse of life on the bay

   The 12th annual Chesapeake Bay Day was held on Thursday at Thomas Hunter Middle School, giving the school’s sixth graders a chance to learn about some of the science, history and culture of the region. The event was organized by Janet Burgess of Riverwood Educational Services and funded through a Mathews Market Days grant. An interactive, rotational educational experience, Chesapeake Bay Day is taught by 20-25 professional resource people knowledgeable in their field of expertise regarding the bay’s heritage, environment and occupations. Students got a chance to try their hand at oyster tonging, use a cross- cut saw and caulking mallet similar to the tools used in traditional boatbuilding, got information about boating safety, learned about the steamboats that plied the county’s waters, heard of the Civil War history of the region and were informed about aspects of the Chesapeake Bay Act.
