Mathews Social Services issues appeal for its Food Closet

The Mathews County Department of Social Services has issued an appeal for donations of non-perishable food items or money for its Food Closet.

The department’s Food Closet serves its customers Monday through Friday on an emergency basis. “Our Food Closet helps those that are applying or reapplying for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits,” said Social Services Community Outreach Coordinator Lauren Oden. “Many times there is an immediate need for food, and our food pantry serves that need.”

At present, Oden said, the Food Closet’s shelves are almost bare.

“Please consider collecting food items for our closet or, if you prefer donating money, you can make your check payable to Mathews Social Services, notating ‘food fund,’” Oden said.
