Mathews soccer teams post wins over Pointers

The Mathews High School varsity and JV soccer teams picked up a pair of wins on Monday at West Point. For the varsity Devils, the 7-2 victory was the team’s first of the season, while the JV squad posted back-to-back 5-0 shutout wins over Rappahannock and West Point.

Varsity Devils

Mathews dominated the homestanding Pointers, with Caleb “KK” Thomas, Carson Brown and Cameron Stearns scoring two goals apiece, with Brandon Gandee providing a single goal. Brown had three assists, while Thomas and Fabian Cardenas were each credited with one assist. Goalie Jackson Putt had two assists to go with his 13 saves.

Last Wednesday, the varsity Devils fell to the Rappahannock Raiders, 6-4. Thomas scored a hat trick for Mathews in the back-and-forth game, while Andrew Greve scored a lone goal. Brown had two assists and Cardenas added an assist. Putt had 18 saves.
