Mathews soccer teams back on the field

The Mathews High School varsity and JV soccer teams opened the 2016 season on Monday with a home scrimmage against Washington and Lee.

The 2016 varsity spring soccer season at Mathews began in late-February under the tutelage of new head coach Jacob Ryan and assistant coach Lindsay Newell.

The team started off Monday’s game well against the visiting Eagles, with Stuart Anderson quickly scoring two goals, which were followed by quick third and fourth goals scored by Zach Foss and exchange student Daniel Michinaux. Although defense was good, towards the end of the first half, Washington and Lee scored not once, but three times against Mathews goalie Jacob Maggioncalda.  The halftime score was 4-3 with Mathews retaining a small lead over W&L. During the second half, Mathews defense stayed strong and Maggioncalda was a brick wall and the Blue Devils were able to hold W&L back.
