Mathews soccer starts off season against W&L

Mathews soccer kicked off with a scrimmage last Thursday against the Washington and Lee Eagles. Although junior varsity and varsity teams were on the schedule to play, frigid temperatures of about 36 degrees Fahrenheit, prevented the JV match.

The Washington and Lee players started with the advantage of one game under their belts and scored an early goal in the first half against the Blue Devils, but Jordan Bozza quickly responded with a goal for Mathews.

With the game tied at 1-1, Mathews kept the pressure on and Stuart Anderson Jr. went in for another shot, succeeded, and gave the Blue Devils a one-goal lead over the Eagles. The Washington and Lee offense had a few breakaways, but the Eagles were unable to get past the brick wall of Mathews defense and goalie Jacob Maggioncalda.
