Mathews soccer ends week with win, loss and tie

It was a busy week for Blue Devil soccer, as the Mathews High School varsity squad picked up a 2-1 win over Middlesex, tied West Point, 2-2, and lost to King William in a game shortened by concerns over a thunderstorm, 3-2.

With lightning and thunder cancelling the junior varsity game, Monday night’s varsity matchup in King William started with uncertainty, with both teams a little hesitant because of the weather.

The game was halted after only five minutes of play, but soon resumed and started off well for the Devils as Adam Wade’s goal gave Mathews an early lead.

King William quickly responded and knotted the score at 1-1. Mathews drew a penalty kick and the Devils decided to bring up Jordan Bozza for the job, whose skill was evident as he fooled the goalie and scored, allowing Mathews to recapture the lead.
