The Flock LPR (License Plate Reader) Camera has generated a lot of public discussion lately, especially on social media, and that includes in Mathews County. At a public information session on the topic held last Thursday, Mathews Sheriff April Edwards described the cameras as “a hot topic” and told the 18 or so people gathered, “If I were you, I’d be questioning the government, as well.” Edwards shared background on how the cameras came to be installed in Mathews, while her “tech guru,” Major Patric Graham, talked about what they’re used for and what kinds of crimes they have helped to solve. Edwards said when she took office in 2024, Gov. Glenn Youngkin was awarding grants to sheriff’s offices and public agencies across the state to help reduce crime. A crime had recently occurred in Mathews in which five tractors were stolen from Mathews Lawn and Garden overnight and “no one saw anything,” she said.
