Mathews County Public Schools is in the process of hammering out an agreement with Rappahannock Community College that would allow some Mathews High School students to graduate with a two-year associate’s degree, along with guaranteed admission to a number of top Virginia universities.

"I highly suspect that we will have an associate’s degree program next year," assistant superintendent Nancy Welch told school board members during Tuesday night’s meeting, which was held in the MHS media center.

Welch has been meeting with RCC officials for several months working out the details of the plan, acting upon a suggestion from school board member Bill Johnson, who is excited about the prospect.

"It’s my kind of stimulus program," he said, with parents saving a tremendous amount of money on the first two years of tuition. "It’s just a win-win. It’s an awesome set of circumstances."
