Mathews schools gear up for opening day

It won’t be long before school is back in session.

Mathews County Public Schools will hold its Opening Day Convocation for new and returning employees at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22, in the Brooks Auditorium at Thomas Hunter Middle School.

School board chair Linda Hodges and Jack White, chairman of the Mathews County Board of Supervisors, are expected to deliver greetings from their respective boards to the faculty and support staff.

New teachers are scheduled to report to their schools on Monday, Aug. 21, with returning teachers coming back the following morning. The teachers will then participate in eight days of professional development.

An open house for students and parents will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 30. The 2017-2018 school year officially begins after the Labor Day holiday, on Tuesday, Sept. 5. ...
