Mathews school enrollment figures right on target, Holleran says

With less than two weeks to go until the first day of school, Mathews County Public Schools’ enrollment figures are right on target, according to division superintendent Dr. David J. Holleran.

Addressing the school board during Tuesday night’s meeting in the Mathews High School media center, Holleran said that the projected enrollment for the 2014-2015 school year is almost identical to the number used as the basis for the budget.

This year’s budget is based on an enrollment of 1,118 students and “right now, we’re sitting at 1,120,” Holleran said. “If we hold that all year, we’ll be in good shape.”

In other news, the school board began preliminary talks about the process of replacing Holleran, who has announced that he will retire at the end of the current school year. School board chairman John Persinger said that the board hopes to develop a job posting and an application within the next month or so.
