Mathews School Board holds first town hall meeting

For a little over an hour Tuesday night, Mathews County School Board members fielded questions on a wide range of topics, from funds for Mathews High School athletics to the need for a fourth kindergarten teacher at Lee-Jackson Elementary, and a whole lot more, during the board’s first quarterly town hall meeting.

The meeting in the MHS media center came about following a contentious August school board meeting where a number of residents spoke out against a decision to eliminate the athletic director position and place those duties in the hands of MHS assistant principal Alexis Foster.

At a special meeting later that month, the school board changed course on the administrative change, appointing Paul White, who had served as AD from 2007 to 2014, to the athletic director position.

The sudden appointment was the topic of one of the questions brought up Tuesday night, with Jessica Christensen asking why the normal hiring procedure was not followed in this case.
