Mathews School Board appoints three teachers

The Mathews County School Board approved appointments for Mathews High School special education teacher Heather McDevitt, Thomas Hunter Middle School special education teacher Carl Kelly and THMS social studies teacher Jennifer Hughes during its Dec. 18 meeting.

All three teacher appointments are for the current school year. The board also approved the resignation of bus aide Vickie Farmer and the appointment of bus aide Margaret Gallagher for the current school year.

One coaching appointment was also made at the Dec. 18 meeting. Ben Davis was named the school’s junior varsity soccer coach for the upcoming spring season.

The school board will next meet on Tuesday, Jan. 15, in the MHS media center, beginning with a budget work session at 4 p.m. The regular monthly meeting will follow at 6.

In other news, Superintendent of Schools Nancy Welch said that a bid has been awarded to repair the water issue at Thomas Hunter Middle School and work will begin soon after the first of the year.

At the school board’s November meeting, Welch had reported that six classrooms, two bathrooms and the nurse’s office at the school have been without running water due to a problem with the pipes.

A public hearing on the proposed 2018-2019 budget will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 29, also in the MHS media center. Immediately following that meeting will be another budget work session. The school board’s annual retreat will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31, in the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad building in Hudgins.
