Mathews sailor speaks about 3-year voyage at library summer program

Tuesday marked the beginning of the second week of the youth summer program at Mathews Memorial Library.

The theme, “Oceans of Possibilities,” is designed to engage participants in a voyage of discovery about the rivers, seas and oceans that make up most of our planet’s surface.

A special treat was in store for the 22 young people present on Tuesday. Sharing his adventures as a lifelong sailor and boat designer was Mathews resident Jim Brown.

During his talk, Brown told the group of a three-year trip around the tip of South America when he and his family sailed from California to Virginia. His personal experiences prompted many questions about what it was like to make such a voyage.

The program continues each week this month, providing many opportunities for learning and sharing adventures through the lemonade lectures on Tuesday, creative opportunities on Thursday and exciting trips planned for each Friday during July.
