Mathews rowers capture silver, two bronze medals

The Mathews High School crew traveled last Saturday to Sandy Run Regional Park in Occoquan to compete in the 2015 Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association State Championships. The young team fared well, taking a silver medal and two bronze finishes.

Under sunny skies and near-ideal conditions, Lilly Thompson launched her boat for the women’s single final. Improving her performance in Mathews the week before, she took second place, 2.83 seconds behind Western Albemarle and ahead of Granby and Great Bridge.

In the men’s single, Bill Riley, the team’s only senior, took second in the preliminary heats pulling the third fastest time, and went on to take the bronze medal in the final behind Western Albemarle (A) and Albemarle, finishing ahead of Wakefield, James River and W. Albemarle (B).
