Mathews Rotary raises, donates nearly $32,000 in fiscal year

The Mathews Rotary Club had a very successful fiscal year, raising and donating nearly $32,000 in FY 2022-2023.

“As always, the local community was a big supporter of the four annual fundraising events that were held,” a release stated, referring to the Oyster Roast and BBQ Riot in October 2022 at Williams Wharf; the Rockfish Tournament in December 2022 from Morningstar Marinas at Hudgins; Flags for Heroes held May through July 2023 at Mathews Court House; and Party With a Purpose held in June at Williams Wharf.

The same events will be held this coming fiscal year including the Chili Cookoff on Super Bowl Saturday in February 2024.

Thanks to the club’s efforts and the community’s support, Mathews Rotary was able to donate the nearly $32,000 to 29 local organizations.

The donations covered a wide variety of worthy organizations including: Hands Across Mathews, the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department, American Legion Post 83’s Boys State, Girls State and Christmas Meals on Wheels programs; Mathews Little League, the MHS After Prom Committee, THMS sewing machines, MCVIC/Sibley’s renovation, the Bay School, Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, Bay Aging, the Christmas Store, Mathews Family YMCA, the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office, Mathews Historical Museum, Mathews Against Poverty, The Rise as One Foundation, Triad, the Christmas Blessing Fund, Main Street Flower Baskets, Mathews Land Conservancy, Gloucester Mathews Care Clinic, Mobjack Rowing Association; Mathews County Public Schools All Virginia Band, Tappahannock Rotary, and Meals on Wheels.

Mathews Rotary is a part of Rotary International with 1.4 million members whose motto is “Service Above Self.” It is an active, service-oriented club dedicated to assisting and augmenting other community organizations as well as their own projects (buying and installing AEDs, New Point Comfort Overlook, Bayside, Machicomico shelters, etc.).

Most members of Mathews Rotary join to partake in the fellowship of the group, but most importantly because it is a way to give back meaningfully to the community, the release stated. Mathews Rotary is seeking donations from community members and businesses to support its community services and projects for the upcoming fiscal year.
