Mathews rolls over Chargers, 51-14

Thanks in large measure to Chris Davis’s 257 rushing yards, the Mathews High School varsity football team completely dominated the Middlesex Chargers last Thursday night, 51-14.

The junior running back was all but unstoppable as he scored touchdowns on runs of 15, 1 and 36 yards.

In spite of the lopsided final score, Middlesex did present a serious challenge to the Devils, especially late in the second quarter. Trailing 24-0 with less than five minutes until halftime, the Chargers connected on a 40-yard touchdown pass and, on the ensuing kickoff, pooch kicked it over the Devils’ front line, recovering the ball and quickly converting it to a second score and a two-point conversion to narrow the gap to 24-14 at the half.

But in the second half, it was all Mathews as the Blue Devils reeled off 26 unanswered points to complete the rout.

Mathews has to dig far back into its record book to find as complete a victory as this one. The last time the Blue Devils scored ...
