Mathews roadside cleanup set for April 28

The Mathews Visitor and Information Center will host its spring roadside cleanup event from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 28.

The event occurs twice a year and is undertaken by community groups, Adopt-A-Highway volunteers, and residents in spring and fall. A rain date is set for May 12.

“We invite families, groups, and organizations to make up a group of at least two people to pick up a section of road,” said Executive Director Emily Allen.

Groups will meet between 8 and 9 a.m. at the Visitor Center on Main Street to sign in, receive safety and route information, and equipment.

There will be complimentary coffee and donuts in the morning and the visitor center will furnish nets, safety vests, trash bags and gloves to aid with pickup.

Groups may choose their own road to work on; however, there will be a list of high-priority roads available. Groups are encouraged to keep a count of how many bags of trash they collect for VDOT informational purposes.
