Mathews resident concerned about shooting range noise

A Fickle Fen Road resident asked the Mathews County Board of Supervisors during Tuesday’s meeting to take some kind of action to curtail the noise at a skeet shooting range recently established in her neighborhood.

Elaine Sopko said that the range is only a quarter of a mile from her house and that shooting can occur there daily, sometimes lasting for hours at a time. The week of Gloucester’s Daffodil Festival, more than 1,400 rounds were shot off, she said.

Retired from the military after a 21-year career, Sopko said she isn’t opposed to guns and that she has shot plenty of guns herself, but that so much gun activity so close to houses shouldn’t be allowed. She said she couldn’t understand how the shooting range could have been established without the neighbors being notified.

“I retired and moved to Mathews for peace and quiet,” she said, “and I’m being deprived of that.”
