Mathews recognizes its teachers of the year

Tuesday was a night for celebrating educational excellence, as the Mathews County School Board took time to recognize the division’s three teachers of the year.

During the meeting in the Mathews High School media center, assistant superintendent Nancy Welch proudly introduced this year’s three honorees—Lee-Jackson Elementary kindergarten teacher Christina Davis, Thomas Hunter Middle School fifth grade science teacher Cindy Machen, and Mathews High School CTE teacher Cynthia Hayes.

“We have a legacy of excellence” here in Mathews, Welch said, and these three women are a big part of that. The teachers were nominated by their peers and have been recognized for their teaching experience, classroom innovation, support of staff development and professional demeanor, among other qualities, she said.
