Mathews planners to consider comp plan again

The Mathews County Planning Commission will consider whether to recommend adoption of the draft Comprehensive Plan 2030 at a 7 p.m. meeting on Tuesday, in the historic courthouse on Court Street. The commission tabled a decision on the plan after a joint public hearing with county supervisors last month.

During that hearing, several people raised questions about various sections of the document, but the strongest objections came from three Mathews residents and three state forestry officials who questioned the language concerning forestry.

Paul Verbyla, a timber consultant, said that certain language in the document could compromise the investment that property owners have made in their timber assets.

Planning director John Shaw pointed out that the language mentioned was included as part of an action strategy, but that the policy associated with it was very supportive of forestry.
