Mathews planners expected to vote on rezoning case

The Mathews County Planning Commission is expected to make a decision on a proposed rezoning of a 7.168-acre parcel on Godfrey Bay Road when it meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the historic courthouse.

The request, initially the topic of a January public hearing, was discussed and tabled last month. The property owners are seeking to rezone the parcel from rural to residential in order to build a minimum of five homes on the site.

At the February meeting, some planners expressed concern that adding more residential units would create a traffic burden for Godfrey Bay Road, which is located off Hallieford Road. Vice chairman Tim Hill also brought up the marketability of the houses during that meeting.

Since the matter was tabled twice (following the January public hearing and last month), planners will have to make a decision this month, or it will be forwarded to county supervisors with no recommendation.
