Mathews planners discuss goals for coming year

The Mathews County Planning Commission briefly met on Tuesday, adopting the annual report for 2016, electing officers, and discussing goals for 2017.

Mathews County Planning Director Thomas Jenkins suggested that, as two of the goals for 2017, the commission take a look at food trucks and tiny homes. He explained that he had received an increasing number of queries regarding both issues and that, with no ordinances governing them, he needed some guidance on how to respond.

The major issue with tiny homes, said Jenkins, is determining whether they’re improvements to the property or mobile homes. The ones that are placed on foundations and meet building code requirements aren’t the issue, he said. It’s the ones that are on a chassis and might not meet building codes. Some people have asked about bringing in two or three of the structures for friends, he said, adding, “At what point does it become camping?”
