Mathews places sixth in state

The Mathews High School wrestling team finished in sixth place in the VHSL Group 1A tournament, which was held on Friday at the Salem Civic Center. Mathews ended the tournament with 45 team points, one point behind Lancaster and one point ahead of Parry McCluer.

“A big thing that happened was the constant changing of the schedule,” said MHS head coach Frank Taylor. The tournament went from a two-day event to a one-day tournament and then all the way down to a single-elimination competition.

Caleb Sadler lost quarterfinals by two points. Mason Fiscella lost quarterfinals by a pin. Joe Hall lost by points. Dominick Cummings lost by pin. Isaiah Maultsby lost by pin.
