Mathews picks up two district baseball wins

The Blue Devils baseball team picked up two district wins last week at home by beating West Point, 5-0, on April 23 and Middlesex, 7-1, on Friday night.

The Devils, backed by stellar pitching and consistent offensive output, captured their second district win of the season against West Point last Tuesday. Mathews High took advantage of West Point’s mistakes to score three runs in the first. Mathews posted up one more run in the fourth and one in the sixth to take a commanding lead into the seventh.

Josh Wilson, who stymied the Pointers through the first six innings, finished off the task and shut the door in the seventh. Wilson was a dynamic factor in the win, allowing only two hits and no runs on his first shutout of the season. RBIs were granted to Wilson, who picked up two of them to help his own cause, and Paul Burnette and William Smith (one each). Wilson also provided his squad with a pair of base hits.
