Mathews Parent Resource Center set to close Aug. 31

The Mathews County Parent Resource Center, which has been helping parents navigate the special education system for the past four years, will have to shut its doors at the end of the month unless some last-minute funding can be found to keep its coordinator.

"Due to lack of funding, and barring receiving sufficient funds in the very near future, the Mathews County Parent Resource Center will be losing its coordinator effective Aug. 31," Special Education Advisory Committee chairman Barbara Fleming told members of the Mathews County School Board during its meeting Tuesday night in the Mathews High School media center.

The Parent Resource Center was established in 2009 in partnership with Mathews Memorial Library to provide resources for parents and caregivers of special needs students. "This has been accomplished by having a knowledgeable coordinator who is at the library on specific days," Fleming said.
