Mathews NAACP membership drive underway

The Mathews Branch of the NAACP, Unit 7090, is holding its annual membership drive through June.The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s mission is to secure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights in order to eliminate race-based discrimination and ensure the health and well-being of all persons, a release stated.

The Mathews Branch NAACP was established in 1944 under its first president Abraham Parrish. It holds an annual Freedom Fund Banquet in October, as well as a Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration in January. An annual scholarship is awarded for post-secondary education.

Work is done through a variety of committees: Communications, Press, and Publicity; Community Coordination; Education; Freedom Fund; Health; Legal Redress; Membership; Political Action; Religious Affairs.
