Mathews NAACP holds Freedom Fund banquet

Eighty-five people attended the Mathews Branch NAACP Freedom Fund banquet held on Saturday, Oct. 7 at the Church of Francis de Sales in Mathews.

This event serves as a fundraiser for the Beatrice Bobo Scholarship Fund. Beatice Bobo was a longtime president of the Mathews NAACP and a beloved educator in Mathews County Public Schools.

Leslie Willis, master of ceremonies and a member of the Thomas Hunter School Class of 1958, announced that several of the surviving members of the class of ’58 were donating $65 each to the Bobo Scholarship Fund, to mark the 65th anniversary of their high school graduation.

The 2023 recipient of the Bobo Scholarship is Brian Robinson, son of Phyllis Hunter-Robinson of Mathews, who also received the scholarship in 2022. A graduate of Mathews High School, he is now a junior at Old Dominion University, majoring in strategic communications.
