Mathews Museum reopens Friday

The Mathews Historical Museum, located at 200 Main Street, will reopen Friday after renovations that began at Christmas.

The museum will open at 5 p.m. for a reception, and at 6 p.m. show the HBO documentary film “The Loving Story.” This 2011 movie tells the story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple who married in Virginia in 1958 when such unions were illegal. Their struggle to be together went to the Supreme Court and was a hallmark of the Civil Rights era.

During the reception before the film, the museum will recognize its retired director, John Caramia.

The movie will be aired in the newly renovated movie room of the Mathews Historical Museum. It is free and open to the public. Early arrival is recommended, a release said.

The movie showing is one of two events the museum is sponsoring in recognition of Black History Month.

The second event will take place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25, at the Cobbs Creek Arts Center, located at 61 Cobbs Creek Lane.
