Mathews Men Read will discuss the book “The Soul of the First Amendment” by noted lawyer and legal scholar Floyd Abrams during the book club’s next meeting at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, at Mathews Memorial Library.
Members of the local book club hold lively discussions regarding their selected books while enjoying coffee and sweets during sessions that are held on the first Thursday of each month, said a press release.
Participants begin the selection process by individually reading a wide variety of books in advance of the monthly meetings. At each meeting, they discuss the merits of their various books before choosing one for all to read and discuss in depth at the next meeting. The library then purchases multiple copies of the book chosen.
“The Soul of the First Amendment” examines “the degree to which American law protects free speech more often, more intensely and more controversially than is the case anywhere else in the world,” said the release, adding that the book “should prove both challenging and informative.”
Individuals who wish to join Mathews Men Read in this and/or other book discussions may visit the library to learn more about the club and obtain a copy of the October selection.
