Mathews Memorial Library remains open after heat goes out

Mathews Memorial Library staff arrived at work on Monday, Jan. 29, to discover that the main section of the library had no heat, but they managed to make some adjustments in order to remain open for patrons.

Library Director Bette Dillehay said the heating and air conditioning company told her it would take two weeks to repair the HVAC system, and she thought the library might have to close. But, with several meetings scheduled for library space, she and her staff quickly brainstormed and decided to transfer services to the library’s new wing.

On Friday, the AARP was able to begin its free tax preparation service at the library, with those seeking help nearly filling up the seats in the computer atrium and the Teen Center. Upcoming meetings of the Main Street Committee and Mathews County Historical Society will also be accommodated, said Dillehay.
