Mathews man wins $1 million in lottery

James Helbig of Susan, drove to Newport News recently to pick up some parts for his marine repair job. While he was driving back, he happened to spot Rip’s Food Store at 905 Denbigh Boulevard.

"What the heck, I’ll just try it," he thought to himself.

So he went inside and bought a $120 Million Cash Blowout ticket from the Virginia Lottery. When he scratched it, he thought he won $1,000.

"Then I thought it was $100,000," he later told Lottery officials. "When I saw it was a million, I couldn’t believe it."

On Wednesday, Helbig returned to the store to receive his check from Virginia Lottery officials. The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
