The Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred Monday evening on Route 14 (John Clayton Memorial Highway) in Gloucester that resulted in the death of a Mathews County man.
At 6:23 p.m., a 1995 Jeep Cherokee was traveling eastbound near the intersection with Crab Thicket Road when it ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree, according to VSP public relations coordinator Matthew Demlein.
The driver, Arthur C. Rowe Jr., 68, of Mathews, died at the scene. Rowe was not wearing a seatbelt, VSP said. The crash remains under investigation.
This is the second fatality on Gloucester County roads in 2025.
